Mission and Authorizing Statute
As a special district, Novato Sanitary District is an independent local agency with a publicly elected board of five directors, currently serving about 60,000 residents. The District’s primary responsibilities include wastewater collection and treatment, water recycling, and solid waste collection and disposal.

Authorizing Statute
The Novato Sanitary District (formerly Marin County Sanitary District No. 6), a political subdivision of the State of California, is a governmental agency. The principal enabling legislation for the District is the California Health and Safety Code, sections 6400 et seq. (Sanitary District Act of 1923). Novato Sanitary District was formed in October 1925.
