What You Pour Down The Drain and Flush Matters!
A Healthy Sewer System is Essential for Protecting Public Health and the Environment. Everything we pour down our sinks and drains and flush down our toilets travels through our home plumbing to the sewer main and can cause problems along the way:
- Fats, oils, and grease (FOG), and non-flushable items like wipes can cause clogs, leading to costly repairs.
- If these items reach the treatment plant, they can tangle in pumps, block pipes, cause mechanical failures.
- And can result is harmful sewer spills that threaten the environment and public health.
The Solution Is Simple!

Here is What You Can Do to Help!
Keep FOG Out of Sinks and Drains
- Collect cooled fats, oils, and grease (FOG) in a sealed disposable container and dispose of it in your black trash cart.
- Use your green compost cart for ALL food scraps, including meat, bones, and uncoated paper (like greasy paper towels).
- Use the disposal only to clear standing water from your sink.
Keep Trash Out of the Toilet
- Only flush pee, poo, and toilet paper.
- Dispose of ALL trash like tampons, condoms, wipes (most are non-flushable), Q-tips, dental floss, and rags in the trash.
- Place uncoated paper products such as paper towels and tissues, and food items in the green compost cart.
Did You Know?
Do Not Flush labeling is now required on all non-flushable wipes, which is nearly 90% of all wipes sold in the US.
