FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 29, 2020
(Washington, D.C. and Novato, CA) – the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) presented Novato Sanitary District with a Platinum8 Peak Performance Award in a live presentation ceremony recorded in Washington, D.C. This annual award is presented to honorees who have achieved eight consecutive years of excellence in wastewater treatment operational performance and permit compliance.
Top One Percent of Treatment Plants. District General Manager-Chief Engineer Sandeep Karkal noted that “there are nearly 15,000 wastewater treatment plants in the country and only about 150 earn the coveted Platinum Peak Performance Award. This is one indication of our commitment to protecting Novato’s environment and public health. I am very proud of the entire staff and Board of Directors that have earned this.”
This year, Novato Sanitary District is the only entity in the North Bay to be recognized with this award.
Comply with Over 1,000 Specific Requirements. The national award is based on compliance with a plant’s permits. Novato’s permits list nearly 1,000 specific requirements, including strict annual, monthly, weekly, and daily water quality limits established to protect the Bay and public health.
Adam Krantz, Chief Executive Officer of NACWA, congratulates this year’s honorees, noting that “these utilities represent the top performers in the whole country and go above and beyond in their mission to protect public health and the environment. On behalf of NACWA’s Board of Directors, I extend my congratulations and gratitude to all this year’s award winners and I thank them for their service and their incredible compliance with increasingly rigid Clean Water Act standards. This year has seen unprecedented challenges in the wake of the pandemic, and the Peak Performance Award winners have more than risen to the occasion.”
About the Platinum Awards. Platinum Awards recognize 100% compliance with permits over a consecutive five-year period. Facilities that maintain 100% compliance beyond the initial award are honored with Multi-Platinum Award status. Novato Sanitary District’s eight consecutive years of compliance have earned it four consecutive Platinum Performance Awards.
