Novato Sanitary District Earns Platinum for Perfect Treatment Plant Compliance for Five-Years
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 7, 2017
The Washington DC based National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), has announced that the Novato Sanitary District’s Novato Wastewater Treatment Plant has earned a Platinum5 Peak Performance Award, which is given only to wastewater treatment facilities that have perfect permit performance records for five consecutive calendar years.
NACWA's Peak Performance Awards program recognizes NACWA-member agency facilities for excellence in wastewater treatment as measured by their compliance with their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Each year about 125-150 treatment facilities earn this exceptional honor out of more than 16,000 publicly owned wastewater treatment plants operating in the United States.
The Novato Treatment Plant was completely rebuilt and became operational in October 2010. The facility is extremely energy efficient and has lowered greenhouse gasses by about 14% compared to the old plant. It is operated through an innovative public/private partnership with Veolia Water, providing exceptional quality and saving well over $1 million per year in operational costs. The treatment plant also produces millions of gallons of highly treated recycled water, which is provided to the North Marin Water District (NMWD) to offset potable water use, primarily irrigation of large landscapes.
The District’s new treatment plant currently operates far better than its regulatory requirements, and hasn’t violated any of its strict local, state and federal water quality requirements for five straight years. These include nearly 1,000 specific permit requirements, including annual, monthly, weekly and daily quality limits established to protect the Bay and public health.
"We are very proud to receive this award, but are most grateful knowing that the work we do every day protects public health and protects the Bay," said Sandeep Karkal, General Manager of the Novato Sanitary District.
The District will be recognized with a formal presentation of its Platinum5 Peak Performance Award at an Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 during NACWA’s Utility Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO.
